4 Morning Habits That Are Preventing You From Losing Weight

Everyone has his or her unique morning routine. But, have you ever stopped and asked yourself if your morning routine is helping you reach your goals. There are a few things many people do in the morning that can actually make it more difficult to stay or get in shape. Are you guilty of these things? Spoiler alert, I am.

Hitting Snooze

Why do we set alarms in the morning if we plan to ignore them five times? Studies have shown that the ten extra minutes (even an extra hour) of sleep aren’t beneficial. When your alarm wakes you up, it ends your sleep cycle. So, when you fall back asleep, the sleep cycle restarts. The beginning of a sleep cycle is the part that encourages deep sleep. This means the next time your alarm goes off, you’ll be woken up at the worst possible time and you will likely feel more tired than when that snooze alarm popped up the first time. While sleep is an important part of weight loss, so is stress. When you feel tired and anxious from a “bad nights sleep” your cortisol levels go up and as does the number on the scale. Get up and start moving after that first buzzer!

Waking Up At The Last Possible Second

It takes five minutes to brush my teeth and wash my face, and another five to get dressed. I’ll need to use the bathroom, grab food and fill up my water bottle…. So I need to set my alarm for exactly 22-minutes before I need to be out the door. Does this sound like you? We have all done this, but we should all stop. It’s better to have more time in the morning than the exact right amount. Start setting your alarm for 10-minutes earlier so you can move around a bit more before heading out the door. A stressful morning routine affects your mood and energy, not to mention those cortisol levels. The earlier you wake up, the more refreshed you are going to feel when it’s go-time. Phone Check

Another extremely common and unhealthy morning habit is waking up and turning on your screen. I too scroll through Instagram and read emails for a few minutes before getting out of bed. But, this is a habit we should all break. We have too much screen time throughout the day as it is; we need to give our brains a break. Again, try to create a calmer morning routine with some exercise or light stretching. Morning laziness will not help you reach your weight loss goals.

But First Coffee

Coffee first thing is no bueno for the stomach. Drink a glass of water before hitting the caffeine. Your body gets dehydrated throughout the night, and starting your morning off with water is the only thing that will help. Coffee actually dehydrates the body more, so it is making the situation worse. Dehydration can lead to bloating, which could be a reason your scale is heavier each morning. Drinking some H2O first will also help prepare your stomach for the heavier stuff. Coffee is highly acidic and can irritate the stomach lining. Be safe, and drink water!
